Follow Your Dreams #fireworkpeople

Hi!

I've recently noticed quite a few new followers, and I thought that now would be a great time to re-introduce what this blog is all about!!

I'm one of those people that dreams of changing the world, one small step at a time. That's why I am absolutely thrilled to have found the #fireworkpeople community.

This community is about encouraging each other to follow our dreams and our goals. This post is a part of the #fireworkpeople blog tour, and I'm here to introduce my life goals and dreams.

Of course, I've always wanted to change the world. As I mentioned in past posts, I was always the little girl on the field who said "Anything boys can do, I can do better!"

It was in high school when I truly realized my dream of starting a magazine to empower teen girls. My magazine will be something that could stand next to popular magazines, like Seventeen, to give girls another side to girlhood. Girls aren't all pretty and pink, makeup and fashion. A lot of us girls are barely into that stuff. Warrior Queen magazine will be about self-love, strength, independence, and all of the things girls like (including dirtbiking, extreme sports, hard music, etc).

In my late teens, I began my blog to gain a following for the someday magazine, but it wasn't until last year when I really begin to dive into the blogging community. Boy, have I met some wonderful, inspiring ladies.

Through the encouragement of my blog friends, I have watched this blog grow, realized other dreams and truly feel as though I have begun to empower girls and women around me. I want to  be a mover and shaker, do you?

Are you a member of the Warrior Queen community? Read more about the definition here. We will be updating our community and growing soon, so now is the time to sign up for the newsletter!

If you're feeling the call to be something greater; if you have a fire inside of you, join the #fireworkpeople!!

Tough Talks: Dealing with Breast Cancer

This is a really difficult blog post for me to write, so please forgive me if it seems all over the place. In simpler words, we are lucky, lucky that my mom only has stage one cancer, but it is still cancer, nonetheless.

At the beginning of the month, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. We do not have it in our family history, so for us it came out of left field. We waited ever so patiently (anxiously) until her appointment last week when they told her it was stage 1.

Their next plan of action was simply to figure out if they were going to do surgery and when. We found out on Friday there may be a chance that she would be having surgery today. Yesterday they said yes, today and then no, Thursday and then maybe it will be another day because the hospital might change.

This part is tough, but anyone who knows anyone who's ever had a life-threatening disease, disorder or illness knows that the doctors will change anything on you at anytime. I know that the doctors will do what is best for my mom but it is still a very scary thing.

Momma Love

In October 2009, I shared this on my blog, naming my Mom the Warrior Queen of the month. I'm thinking of bringing that post back, highlighting a fellow blogger as the WQ of the Month, but today is about my mom.

Today i want to identify one of my favorite warrior queens. She is seriously one of the strongest people I know. Life has thrown so much at her but she refuses to let it hold her back. She's grown a lot stronger in the past 18 months. I love my mom.
As a child, and up until a few years ago, i never realized her strength. Everyday she refuses to give up, always doing all she can for my brother and I. Especially when we have the opportunity and drive to do something. She has always supported us, even if / when we tried to walk all over her.
Mostly, she has a strong heart. She gets out of bed everyday in spite of the chaos life throws her way. It's so inspirational. She loves with more than I've ever seen. I get this trait from her.
She says I taught her to be a WQ, but without knowing it, she's been teaching me since day one. And now, we are each others' strength. Without her love and support I would be NOWHERE near the person I am today.
I love you mommy. =]

I think most of us go through childhood loving and appreciating our mommas but not realizing the strength they have. We don't realize the sacrifices they have made for us. Now that I am at a point in my life where I could be a mother in a few years, my mother's neverending sacrifices astound me.

My brother and I are both adults who could support ourselves, yet she allows us to live in her house to save money to reach our goals. I try to cook her dinner as often as I can, and each time she is thrilled because she doesn't expect it. She expects nothing but love in return.

Many of you know that my mom made my wedding dress. She spent her entire spring break - finally a break from all of her teacher tasks - working on my dress and preparing for my out of town friends to stay at her house.

She is exceptional.

Please remember to appreciate your mother every day, and give her a call if it's been a little too long. And please, be understanding on Mother's Day of those around you who may not share your feelings. Be sensitive to those who have lost their mothers, who never knew their mothers and those whose mothers have fallen short.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Our Take On: #BanBossy

Months ago Tori @ A Little Leigh Way and I began discussing starting a possible series on all things positively influencing women in the world. Last month we talked about Dove's #Selfie Campaign and this month's topic also has a hashtag. Seems to be a new trend ;)

If you haven't heard of the #BanBossy campaign from Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg in collaboration with the Girl Scouts. The campaign's mission is to "ban the word bossy" when little girls assert themselves.

Ending the negative connotation of words and building confidence is a Warrior Queen mission. Building children up, instead of tearing them down with words like "bossy," is necessary.

Fact:

The campaign has been very controversial, with many people misinterpreting it. As a journalist, I can tell that they picked "Ban Bossy" because it is an alliteration. They don't want to delete the word from the English language. Unfortunately, this is what many people are focusing on.

While there's all of this negative feedback (including those from feminists), I think that the campaign has accomplished something: we're all thinking a little harder about the word bossy and when we use it.

The truth is, no matter if you believe that the word is negative or if you own bossy [Like I do], words matter. The words we choose to use keep us in societal norms. Bossy is to little girls as crazy is to women.

Tons of non-profits and organizations work daily to make more girl's leaders and the #BanBossy campaign has started many conversations that needed to be had.

But what are we going to do about it? Are we going to end the use of the word, in the same way that we think we ended the use of "fag?" Or are we going to promote thought before we speak, and more importantly thought before we act.

I've been called bossy my whole life, yet my mom never has been. She was always shy and quiet, and I've always been loud and assertive. When I was called bossy as a kid, I would feel offended. It never stopped me, but it does stop girls with less confidence.

My solution?  We teach girls that, despite the words that you hear, you are a born leader and don't let anyone stand in your way. With that, we'll have more female leaders, more females educated and more opportunities for women and men!

What's your take?

Always Wear Your Invisible Crown

Saturday was International Women's Day. I wanted today's post to be inspired by that greatness.

I don't know what it was that made me such a strong-willed girl power enthusiast. It could have been my hours of watching Power Puff Girls and Johnny Quest; it could have been from hanging out with my cousins; or it could have been from growing up in the 90s "Girl Power" era.

Personally, I think I was born this way.

From a small age, I was concerned with inequality. Why does he get to do that and I can't?  I did not realize that it was gender inequality until I was much older. I just didn't like being told what to do. "You can't do that" motivated me to do just that, and then some more. I'm still like this...I don't like to be bossed around. [Side note, check out the Ban Bossy campaign! I'm in love!]

Anything you can do, I can do better. This was my mantra as a kid.

Girl Scout camp was my favorite as a kid (I'm the blondie)

In 5th grade we played this game called "Peg Ball." Basically, it was like kickball, only you tried to hit the other team members. The boys liked to play boys against girls. One day, the ball flew at me and hit me in the face, knocking off my glasses. I was livid.
I picked up my glasses, put them on and marched over to Justin Whatshisface and said "Apologize. You're not supposed to aim for our heads." He wouldn't. Instead he decided to attempt to threaten me with his fist? He was waving it around like he'd never hit anyone before. I was a purple belt in karate.
He was too scared of me to say anything, so his friend spoke up with the words "He'll hit you, he's hit his girlfriend." I glared at him and shot back "Do I look like his girlfriend? He should respect girls and women and apologize to me for hitting me in the face."
Finally he did and rumors swirled around school that I was a bad ass. I was just standing up for myself...

Throughout my life, from whenever I first heard the word "feminist," I knew I was one.

Girls and women tend to shy away from the term - believing that it is synonymous to "feminazi," a term created by patriarchy because they're terrified of what us girls can do when we get together. Heaven forbid marriages are partnerships and tasks in life are split 50/50 or by who has a less strenuous work schedule, rather than be dependent on gender.

My favorite words to hear out of a man's mouth are "I'm a feminist."

If you want a true definition of the word, check out this post. In short, "feminist" means you believe women should have rights. All of the other stuff, is what's tacked onto it by others and society.

Yes, I think that the glass ceiling is bullshit and believe that women should be offered the same rate of pay as a man based on skill not gender.

When Iman and I first became serious and moved in with each other, I felt like a fraud as a feminist because I wanted to cook him dinner and I didn't mind cleaning up after him. I battled with my feelings of women's rights and that guilt led to quite a few fights that he probably isn't aware of.

This man doesn't take away my feminism.

Because I am a feminist and I did these things for him out of love, I felt that I deserved to have things done for me out of love. That isn't true though. I deserve to be loved but I can take care of myself - as can any woman out there. I don't need Iman to clean up my mess or cook for me.

Girls, we don't need a man, even though it is the most wonderful thing to fall asleep next to the person that I love.

I know this post probably jumped all over about women's rights and feminism, but I hope it at least made some sense to you. I hope you realize how much self-worth you have without any other human being taking any of it.

Also, I've been on the hunt for a girl's group to work with or be a part of and would love any recommendations. I have been dreaming of being a Girl Scout leader for awhile, but I'm not sure if I have enough time. I'm in the LA/OC area, so if you know of any wonderful organizations looking for something more than monetary support, please comment below!

Happy Bloglantine Day!

Aww, you guys! It's Bloglantine Day - aka Valentine's Day for your blog!

Bloglantine Day

Noor and Areeba suggest one of these topics to write about:
-How much do you love your blog
-What are you planning to gift your blog
-What are your plans for your blog in future
-The good times of you & blog
-Some good blogging memories
-And everything about you & your blog.

I've decided to write about how grateful I am for my blog, my blog friends and the opportunities my blog has brought me. I've always been proud to say I'm a blogger - even when no one read my blog. Heck! I love my blog so much, I've got the logo tattooed on my wrist [I recommend it, people will ask and then go follow your blog!]

Through blogging, I've met some wonderful people and made some great friends. This is so special to me, but the part that really tugs on my heart strings is when someone tells me to let them know if they can do anything to help with the Warrior Queen movement. When they tell me that they believe in the movement, I get so excited and jump up and down.

I'm not even joking. Technically, everyone should be in support of something like this. In reality, many people are not. I've had some negative reactions. Some "oh...that's cool" responses. That's okay, they'll understand some day.

With you, my little blog, I've grown so much. It seems every time I had something heartbreaking or out of control you were there for me. The perfect place to fill the ideas my OCD brain comes up with when I'm stressed. I remember the day your name was born. The day my dad finally convinced me to sign up for Blogger. The days I waited to write my first post - terrified that this first post would define me, and define our movement.

But I've grown so much, when I look back at those posts I wrote years ago. My dream has never changed, and I am so grateful to have this space of the internet to pursue that dream.

The magazine may never come to fruition; a brand may never be born and the movement may very well stay grassroots for years to come. Whenever I find other blogs or movements similar, I might feel a twinge of jealous for a moment, and then a roar of excitement because we are out here! We are moving and we are shaking and we're in our own little corners, but one day we will all meet and grow into something big. One day, we will empower and inspire confidence. Self-love is the only thing that can truly heal us, and I think this has got to be my blog theme for the year.

49 Weeks of Doing Good

Erykka and I decided to do the #dogood52ways challenge from the Do Good Bus. Every Wednesday night, we draw a new paper from the jar; complete the task; and invite our blog readers to partake. For more information on how this started go here.

Last week's task was a fun one!

We had the plan to do a whole row of cars in a parking lot with a note that said "Just a stranger hoping to make your day," but Sunday didn't exactly work out for us. We worked on this week's challenge separately.

Erykka did do a whole line of cars with daisies, and I got one car with a carnation. I then gave the rest of the bouquet to Iman because we've had a rough week, and I just love to see his smile!

These do good challenges do not have to be just for people you know or people you don't know. It's nice to mix them up!!

This next week's challenge is definitely one that we will be doing daily - in fact, it is something that I do every day already!!

I'm one of those people who is crazy about picking up trash. I feel bad when I dump water out in the parking lot [I don't know why]. Once, I broke up with a boyfriend because he told me littering created jobs. I almost socked him in the face. I participate in beach, park and desert clean ups. I grew up in Girl Scouts and live by the motto "pack it in, pack it out." As a server, you'll find straw wrappers and trash in my apron pocket because I obsessively take them off of tables as I stop to check in.

Of course, my room is typically a mess and has trash in it, but at least the outside world doesn't!! :P

Join us this week because this is literally the easiest challenge we could have pulled!

The Rules of Heartbreak Round 2

Goood afternoon (morning?) my lovely readers! Having an extra day off of work always leaves me feeling more behind on my day back so I thought I would recycle a guest post today!

This one is from one of my amazing closest friends, and frankly, I couldn't have put it better myself. She's been a Warrior Queen through and through since our high school days. (She's an amazing writer too). Last night we were discussing this blog she wrote and she wanted to add some more / take some out as a more mature person.

By Nura A.

Kate Hudson just about sums it up in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days:

“I love you, but I don’t have to like you right now.”

In fact, you hate him right now. You hate the way you love him unconditionally, the way you let him hurt you, the tiny little things he does that makes you love him more- even when you can’t stand to look at his face. Oh, and that too- you hate his face. You know, the one you’ve kissed all over and look at absentmindedly so full of love and adoration. That one.

You also hate the way you can’t get any sleep; can’t eat (ok, maybe we all kind of like this one…); have a constant headache, stomach ache, heart ache; the way you spent the entire sleepless night bawling like a child; the way the lack of sleep and crying have made your eyes both puffy and dark; the way you can’t breathe; the way you can’t get the hurt out of your head.

And of course, you hate the way you look like complete shit. You can’t be bothered to do your hair, or make-up, or anything to reduce that stupid puffiness. Or even pick a coordinating outfit.

So here we go, ladies. Rules for heartbreak. Whether you’ve broken up, or should be breaking up with him for the way he’s treated you (if he’s treating you bad enough that you’re heart breaks- RUN! You are worth more than that, but we’ll get to that later), here’s the set of rules that any Warrior Queen should follow. If only just to stay sane.

[1] EMBRACE YOUR BEAUTY.

It’s hard to care unless you have the thought in the back of your mind of getting him back. Take that thought- and stomp on it. Just grind it into the ground. You should never accentuate your beauty for the sake of a man, always for yourself. Hell, even with those puffy eyes and messy hair, you’re still gorgeous. But because you don’t feel like it, take extra care to be your beautiful self. He can’t make you look like shit. It’s not his right. Besides, there’s nothing worse than finally being distracted from thinking about it and having someone ask you what’s wrong because you’re not looking, well, up to par.

[2] BUDDY SYSTEM

All those moments when you want to text, call, or email him and shout at him for hurting you, or beg him to take you back, or whatever thought it was that possessed you to want to communicate with him- CALL A FRIEND. Pick a friend, the second that you are hurt, that you are going to call. They don’t even need to pick up. Let them know what’s going on, and most likely they’ll be happy to be there for you (otherwise you need some new friends). Just leave a voicemail saying “Hey, I wanted to call him again…” And then tell them why. Tell them what you wanted to shout or cry to him about. That boy, the immature one that hurt you so bad, needs to feel what it’s like to not have you around or here your voice. We’re not saying give them the silent treatment, just refrain, warrior queen style, from giving them you.

It’s hard, and that’s why we have the buddy system.

[3] BE HONEST
You need to be honest with yourself and him. [Things are never black and white in a relationship, so maybe you're on a break and it's mature...this rule applies to you - Raewyn] When he calls, feel free to pick up. But also feel free to tell him how upset and hurt you are - in a logical, reasonable way. If you can't do that, don't pick up yet.
 [4] BE PREPARED

Be prepared to break it off. If he isn’t ready to compromise or prove to you his love, then you shouldn’t wait around for it. You need to tell him that you can’t be in a relationship with someone who isn’t willing or ready to work at it. Here is the ultimate warrior queen moment: you have to be strong enough to do what is best for you.

[5] GIRLS

Plus, when it’s all said and done, you have your girls to fall back on. We are always here for you, and we will always be. Heartbreak is a part of life, and we have all experienced it (or will). We empathize, but will help you reason. So TALK TO US!

Do you have anything to add? Anything you would do differently? We'd love to hear it, especially because we're trying to fine tune this list!!

Okay my bloggy people, I FINALLY am announcing our super amazing, wonderful T-shirt sales!!!

 photo ColorMeAWarriorQueenButton_zps4dee1733.png

I hope you have been anxiously anticipating this announcement like I have. First, I need to warn you though - I'm still sick, so I might not make 100% sense. I know, that's not the best way to announce a new brand or sell things, but I'm always going to tell you like it is [and probably overshare].

But anyway!! Paulina and I have been planning this for forever, as you might remember. We finally announced that we were going to do it, instead of waiting until next summer because I'm just too excited.

We've tested a couple of companies, and I've got some shirts to return that were not up to our quality. Finally we found an amazing place - thanks to one of my besties referring us to them.

Okay, okay, I know you just want to see the shirts!

So they're American Apparel suuuper soft and we have both women's and men's sizes.

Here's the form to fill out, and as soon as mine come in the mail you will see some beautiful model pictures of me in the shirts ;)

So what are you waiting for?? Normally, we will close our sales on The 15th of every month, but this first month we are going to keep it open until the end of the month because we love you all!!

So what are you waiting for??

p.s. Happy New Years Eve!

Warrior Queen Swag

Oh my gosh! Let me just tell you I'm really excited about this post. I've been so excited about it and almost bursting since last Thursday. I hope you're super excited as well!

Let me preface with a little flashback that probably no one remembers. WAY back in the day of this little blog there used to be a page that said "Wear Your WQ" and it always said "coming soon." In 2011, I finally decided to do something more with the blog. I started researching Trademarking so that I could make it a brand. I have notebooks full of ideas. I had a friend who was excited and working on it with me. We had a falling out later that summer [I'm still not sure what happened]. So, I've been building things much slower. I have never stopped wanting to create the brand and make a difference. In the past few months, I have felt the blog growing and the support has been amazing!! This is my life dream and you all love and support the movement and myself. THANK YOU!

So now, it's finally happening!

Paulina @ Color Me Brave and I have been talking about selling shirts and other products since the summer. We were both really busy and didn't have time to do the research. Now that I'm only working one job I've had some more time. Paulina and her mom also lost their jobs last week and she and I think that this will be a great way for her to stay on her feet.

The two of us are pairing together to sell some Warrior Queen and Color Me Brave swag! Please fill out this form so that we can know what type of specifics our readers would be interested in!

Happy Tuesday!!!

Crown of Beauty Magazine [Review]

Good morning Friday!!

I am so excited to have a day off with endless opportunities ahead of me...I am not going to lie though, I think of my pre-6 a.m. morning drives to work as one of the most serene times of my day. It is just wonderful to wake up and start my day off so beautifully and peacefully.

Speaking of peace and serenity, I wanted to introduce you all to a new online Christian magazine, Crown of Beauty. Last Friday Livy, the founder, published their first issue on beauty and fashion. She contacted me to write a little bit about it and I could not be more excited to share with you my thoughts.

The Warrior Queen movement is a non-religious, non-partisan movement. I preach love and self-worth and grace and people. I believe in people. You may have heard me say that love is my religion. I truly believe in the beauty of love between people. The "how" we were created bit might be a little fuzzy to me - I will never know and only have what I believe - but I do believe in something and I don't believe that we should ever close ourselves off to an idea because the religion or belief structure may be different than mine.

When Livy contacted me, I gushed to my best friend - an active Christian - how excited I was to share this Christian magazine with my readers. Like me, Livy wants women and girls to believe in their true beauty and in their self-worth. She uses the word of God to show girls this.

The very first issue of Crown of Beauty is full of important ideals and ways to be media literate. The articles cover topics like modesty, fashion, being a role model and struggling with self-worth. These words and stories shared are beautiful and I believe that anyone can identify with these stories. Even if you are not religious or are unsure about religion, read it and feel the beauty of the words and the support of these sisters. The issue is only $4.99, and you'll receive the bonus fashion guide!

We are all on the same planet, we may choose to take different paths, but we are all facing a new day each day, why not start those days with positivity, love and self-worth?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Just Another Excited Word Vomit

There's so much I want to tell you all about, but it is going to have to wait because, once again, I am on my lunch break at work - trying to blog and shove food in my face at the same time. Once again, I'm on public internet which runs so, so slow! So instead of a real post, I'll give you a post about what's to come!

I promised you I'd tell you why Monday was so fantastic. So here we go!

I'm not a Monday person. I told you guys about that in this guest post. And this Monday was no different. I had a training meeting at 8 am about 20 miles from me, in my old home town. I  decided to get lost and barely make it there. I also was having a complete freak out about our wedding over the weekend (Hint to a future post #1).

The training went fantastically - and I got a free delicious breakfast from Mimi's Cafe. Seriously, I love that place. But I am so sad they didn't give me a muffin - my fave!

Then I found out I won a free T-Shirt from one of our distributors. It's an autobody shirt but still! WAY COOL. I'm wearing it tomorrow, so keep an eye out on Instagram!

Shortly, thereafter I managed to get free lunch from my boss and free Starbucks from our mechanic. WINNING. I don't know how this all ended up being so awesome! lol.

Monday was also the day that I co-hosted The Collective with Peacoats and Plaid. I got a lot of blog love that day, and I am ecstatic!! I still need to finish visiting all of my new friends and comment / follow. Plus I got nominated for my first Liebster Award by Absolutely Arkansas!

In addition to that, I won By The Porchlight's Bloggers Give Back Giveaway. OH EM GEE. I decided to donate to To Write Love On Her Arms because they're one of my favorite organizations [I still want to intern for them] and last week was National Suicide Prevention Week and they spent the whole week doing awesome things for people!

Tuesday and Wednesday were pretty hectic (like usual) so today I opted to come into work an hour early to hopefully finally maybe make some headway in all of the files I have backed up on my desk. Seriously, I'm about 30 deep in my "should have closed a week or more ago" pile. YIKES!

We've got some major changes at all three of my works right now, so I am floating along.

Yesterday I participated in the Influenster Twitter Party. That was fun! Now to finish up my post and share with you all of the fun stuff I got!

I am beyond ecstatic for this weekend because it is the Sand Sports Super Show. What in the world is that, you may ask? Only my favorite weekend of the year. We go to the sand dunes and ride quads and drive sand buggies and this marks the beginning of the riding season (aka it will finally be cool enough to go) and one of the only times I get to see a bunch of friends each year. I'm volunteering, like usual, and we plan on going to the super trucks show as well!!

Sunday we're going to go visit a wedding venue. But wait - you thought I had that booked. Well, I did. Like I said - WEDDING FREAKOUT. It will alll work out though, I know it.

Then I'm having some girl time Monday night because Iman's taking off for a 1 day no-gambling boys trip to Vegas. I'm totally jealous over here. :)

There's also a little baby making her way into the world sometime today or tomorrow that I am super excited to meet!!! Why does Ohio have to be so far away?

What are you guys up to the rest of the week?
